Trailer
wheel hubs are what connect your trailer wheels to your trailer axle,
and also makes sure both components spin smoothly, so it’s
important that the wheels hubs are in great shape. It can sound
intimidating to pull apart your wheel hub and poke around, but it’s
actually pretty easy to do. Here are a few pointers to ensure that
you’re maintaining your wheel hub properly:
-
When maintaining your trailer’s wheel hub, you’ll need to remove it and disassemble it. It isn’t as complicated as it sounds. All you need is a standard toolbox, hammer, pliers, and wrench. You’ll also need bearing grease to replace your old grease and a solvent to remove the old grease.
-
There are several parts you have to pay attention to during your maintenance. The bearings inside the wheel hub are particularly important; once you’ve disassembled the hub, wipe down the bearings and check them for nicks and rust. Afterwards, apply solvent to get all the old grease off.
-
Another part to check is the seal. The rubber seal on the wheel hub ensures your bearings are in good condition and the grease isn’t dripping. It should be flexible and have no cracks.
-
The race is the last part to check. Run your fingers around it to feel for any defects.
-
After all the checks are done, return the assembly to the axle. When you pack the wheel hub back in, apply a lot of grease on the bearings.
